Why Not Learn the Oboe!

I love to teach the oboe and especially enjoy starting oboe lessons with young students and watching them grow and develop as musicians from beginners through to tertiary level students.
I think every child deserves the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, to play in a band or an orchestra and to experience the joy and excitement of performing music at school or in the community. There is growing evidence that learning a musical instrument develops the brain more effectively than any other activity and actually makes your child more intelligent.
My approach is to guide and empower my students by setting achievable goals. I tailor repertoire and long term goals to suit each student’s personal interests and set smaller goals each week so there are clear expectations for regular weekly practise.
My students tend to be technically strong and play with a clear, centred, well supported tone
I have been privileged to develop a depth of experience and a broad understanding of how students learn, common problems they face and how to solve them in a career that spans more than 35 years.
Over the past 12 years through my work as an AMEB examiner, I have gained insight and expertise that helps students achieve excellent results in performance exams and successfully prepare for auditions, HSC performances and scholarship auditions.
I have a proven track record and currently teach a number of successful scholarship students who often achieve High Distinctions in exams.
However my goals for my students are mastery goals. It’s my aim for students to enjoy learning the oboe, to explore the repertoire at their level and to achieve to the best of their ability whether or not this translates into high marks in exams, though usually it does.
I hold several qualifications including a Bachelor of Music Degree from the NSW Conservatorium of Music, a Graduate Diploma of Arts in Music from the Victorian College of the Arts and a Master of Teaching from Sydney University and the Sydney Conservatorium.
My extensive oboe teaching experience is both local and international and includes work in Sydney, Melbourne, England and Africa in private schools such as The Scots College Bellevue Hill, Trinity Grammar, Kambala, St. Patricks College Strathfield, MLC Burwood, St. Catherine’s Girls School Toorak, Sexey’s School and Bruton School for Girls in Somerset, England.
My professional Oboe / Cor Anglais playing experience includes contract work as Guest principal Oboe with the State Orchestra of Victoria; casual work with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Rantos Collegium, the Sydney Elizabethan Trust orchestra, and a variety of Chamber Music ensembles, Music Theatre Orchestra’s & other freelance ensembles.
In 2014, 2019 & 2020 I was invited to teach Oboe and Bassoon in South Africa with the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra Program, and in Uganda at the Rafiki Foundation Orphanage. This also involved performing as Principal Oboe with the Bivuga Sinfonia at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Kampala, Uganda for their annual Easter concert.
I have tutored undergraduate chamber music ensembles and directed orchestral woodwind tutorials at The Victorian College of the Arts.
I currently teach the Oboe at my private studios in Sydney and online.
I am a member of the Music Teachers Association of NSW and I undertake regular professional development to ensure that I am involved in lifelong learning and keeping abreast of the latest trends and information.

Testimonials
My 9 years old daughter started to learn oboe with Jane late last year, and she has been using Jane’s book 'Why Not Learn The Oboe?' for the past few months. She started with this book and learning online and she is now able to play so much better than she could before. The book is very detailed and thorough, and with Jane’s help and excellent teaching, Olivia was able to go through the lessons in the book very quickly and has improved a lot since she started. Jane is such a wonderful teacher, and my daughter has enjoyed learning and playing oboe. I am confident that my daughter will improve further with Jane's help.

“This year has been a very hard year with Covid-19 and online learning but we did achieve lots though! We entered our first oboe competition and we did our Grade 4 exam; you were there with me the whole way through encouraging me and telling me that I could do it. You are the best oboe teacher anyone could wish for…”
